VPN

There is no public Orama VPN today. There is a command-line client for a private Orama Tor network, and a launch gate that keeps anything public closed. There is no app, no system-wide tunnel and no price. This page says which is which.

What exists: orama maint vpn

orama maint vpn joins an Orama Tor network from your machine (Tor). It reads the network's tor-network.json file.

CommandWhat it does
orama maint vpn up --network tor-network.jsonStarts an unmodified upstream tor configured with the file's directory authorities and no others, and offers a SOCKS5 proxy on loopback (default 127.0.0.1:9150). Runs until interrupted
orama maint vpn check --network tor-network.jsonJoins the network and reads the all-zero account through each validator onion service in the file, each over its own circuit. Passes when at least one answers

ORAMA_ONION_NETWORK supplies --network; a flag wins.

It is a proxy, not a tunnel. Only applications pointed at the SOCKS port use the network, and they must use socks5h so the proxy resolves names. The client has one route: it never falls back to the public Tor network or to a direct connection, and when tor stops the port closes and whatever was using it fails. Only a private network can be joined, since the public Orama network is not launched. The three-hop desktop app with a system-wide tunnel is a separate piece of work and is not built.

The launch gate

chain/x/vpnlaunch answers whether a public VPN beta could open. It is a pure function: no keeper, messages or genesis, and oramad does not link it. It has two parts.

First, every threshold must hold on each of the last 30 days, not on average:

ConditionThreshold
Directory authoritiesat least 5, with an independent majority
Relaysat least 100
Relay operatorsat least 40
Exitsat least 15, in at least 5 countries
Largest operator's or family's share of consensus weightat most 10%, compared exactly in integers so 10.4% does not pass as 10

Second, the launch switch (LaunchEnabled) must be on. It is off in every build, and a test fails if anyone changes it. Turning it on is a release decision made with the 30-day measurement in hand. Opening a beta would be a separate act again.

What the gate measures

Every threshold is about how many independent relays, exits and operators exist and how evenly they share the load. Those numbers come from the Orama Tor network (Tor) and the relay registry (Relay rewards). The code for both exists, but no real network has run, and Orama runs every authority, so the gate cannot open.

What to use instead today

  • +To make a request without revealing a server's address to a destination: the anonymity proxy.
  • +To download a stored object without revealing your address to the storing node: relayed fetch.
  • +To make calls that look like HTTPS: stealth TURN.

Other uses of the word

Every cluster connects its nodes with a WireGuard mesh (10.0.0.0/24). That is internal infrastructure, not a product (WireGuard).
