What is Orama

Orama Network is an open-source cloud platform that runs on many independently operated servers instead of one company's data centres. You use it through a command-line tool (orama), a TypeScript SDK (@debros/orama), a Go client, or plain HTTPS. You get the building blocks an application needs:

  • +hosting for static sites, Next.js apps, Node.js and Go backends
  • +a replicated SQL database and per-app SQLite databases
  • +a cache
  • +file storage
  • +pub/sub messaging with presence
  • +serverless functions (WebAssembly)
  • +domains with automatic HTTPS
  • +voice and video (WebRTC with TURN and an SFU)
  • +push notifications
  • +a secrets vault
  • +outbound anonymity through Tor

Sign-in is a wallet signature. Orama never asks for an email address, a password or a phone number.

This site documents the whole thing: how to build on it, how to install and run a cluster from nothing, how it works inside, how it stays secure, the Orama blockchain, the privacy network, and the RootWallet apps that sign you in.

Three ideas explain most of the design

  1. +Every tenant gets its own small cluster. A tenant is called a namespace. Creating one starts a database, a cache and a gateway on three nodes, just for that namespace. There is no shared table with a tenant column, so there is no cross-tenant query to get wrong.
  2. +No internal traffic crosses the public internet. Nodes talk to each other only inside a WireGuard mesh (10.0.0.0/24). Services that are not meant to be public listen only on the mesh.
  3. +Identity starts with a wallet signature. Everything else (sessions, API keys, roles) is derived from it. The platform learns a public address and nothing more.

Built from known parts

JobComponent
Replicated SQLRQLite (SQLite replicated with Raft)
CacheOlric
File storageIPFS and IPFS Cluster
Messaginglibp2p GossipSub
Functionswazero (WebAssembly runtime), functions written in Go and compiled with TinyGo
Voice and videoPion (WebRTC, SFU, TURN)
DNSCoreDNS, backed by a table in the replicated database
TLSCaddy
MeshWireGuard
AnonymityTor (client only on a cluster node)
LedgerCosmos SDK and CometBFT (oramad)

A Go control layer ties these together into a multi-tenant platform. The same software runs on every node. Nodes differ only in configuration and in which tenants have been placed on them.

What Orama is not

  • +Not a chain in the request path. A database query, a deploy or a function call goes to a gateway, not to the ledger. The Orama chain is a separate process with its own token. The node installer does not start it. See What the chain is.
  • +Not censorship-proof. Nodes are ordinary servers at ordinary hosting providers. Losing one node does not take an application down. That is resilience, not immunity.
  • +Not a defence against a hostile hypervisor. Anyone who can read the memory of a running server can read what it is processing. See the security model.
  • +Not a hosted product with a dashboard. The CLI and SDK are the whole interface. There is no web dashboard and no Orama MCP server. See How you talk to the network.

Where Orama stands today

Orama is alpha software. Node operation is by invitation, because on an ordinary Ubuntu node the operator has root access. You can still run your own private cluster today: that is what Install a cluster from scratch is for. What works today lists what is live, partial, and not built.

Where to go next

  • +Choose your path: developer, operator, security reader, chain reader, wallet user.
  • +Glossary: namespace, gateway, index plane, grant, norama and the rest.
